How to Play Lagos Life: Step-by-Step Beginner's Guide (Nepo & Lapo Start)

Every step from opening the site to your first serious money, plus the Nepo vs Lapo starts.

What Is Lagos Life? (Quick Overview)

Lagos Life is a browser-based life simulation game. Players describe it as “the Sims, but set in Lagos” and search for it as lagos life sims or lagos lifestyle game. It was built by Nigerian developer Shalom Rayhamen, known online as Eliy (@Shalom_HeyEliy on X). It launched on 1 October 2026, Nigeria's Independence Day, is inspired by The Sims 3 and the developer's earlier Lagos-set browser game Lagos Run, and is rated 18+. You share one living city with other real players.

Scale, per Vanguard's reporting: by 6 October the game's own dashboard showed more than 2 million players and 101,000+ concurrent at peak. Note those numbers come from the developer's dashboard, not an independent audit: Vanguard said the same.

Before You Start: No Download, No App

The official game is a website, full stop: lagoslife.app, openable on your phone or computer. There is no official app and nothing to install, which means every “Lagos Life APK download” you see is fake and potentially dangerous. If you want the app-like experience, the safe route is the browser's own “Add to Home Screen”; we walk through that (plus login and loading fixes) in App & Login Help.

The 8 Steps at a Glance

  1. Create your character

Name, look, and a first identity to grow into.

  2. Take your Nepo or Lapo start

The birth lottery, your resources on day one.

  3. Get a job

Income first; everything else follows from it.

  4. Manage your bars

Energy, hunger and health gate how much you can work.

  5. Pay your rent

The hard expense, budget it before anything else.

  6. Explore the city

Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt since 6 October.

  7. Socialise safely

Real players share your city; guard your details.

  8. Build past survival

Careers, property, and the long game.

Step 1: Create Your Character

First you build your person: a name and basic appearance. Two pieces of player advice recur across TikTok guides (this is community experience, not official instruction): pick a look that matches the identity you want to roleplay, the comedian, the promoter, the fashion person, because the game is more fun when your character has a direction; and finish the tutorial missions before free-roaming, since they walk you through the interface faster than trial and error.

Step 2: Pick Your Start (Nepo vs Lapo)

This is the game's signature moment, and the part most guides get shallow. Early in a new game you're dealt one of two starts:

👶 Nepo: the comfortable start

  • Financially better-off from day one, money and advantages you didn't earn
  • Best for: investing into assets early and letting the head start compound
  • Risk: lifestyle creep eats the advantage if you spend like it can't run out

🧃 Lapo: the microfinance start

  • “Lapo” nods to LAPO, the real Nigerian microfinance institution, you start with less, and in debt
  • Best for: the comeback story, job the same day, every non-essential cut, first rent saved fast
  • Reward: the grind is the fun, and disciplined Lapo players pass careless Nepo players

On exact figures: the game presents this as a class difference without publishing official numbers. Social media players widely report it as roughly ₦95k cash for Nepo versus about ₦72k of debt for Lapo, treat those as player-reported, not confirmed stats. Either way the draw is random and permanent, so the only real choice you control is the strategy. (Deep cost-cutting strategy for Lapo players: the cheats page.)

Step 3: Get a Job (and Watch Your Energy)

Career paths are varied, banking, tech, entertainment and more, and each can be levelled up over time. The critical mechanic new players miss: working consumes energy. A shift isn't free money; it costs the resource that also powers everything else you do.

Player-reported supplements to wages: working from home (a ~₦18,000 laptop turns your house into a second income, see the equipment ladder), freelance tasks and map gigs. Use them to fill the gaps between shifts; the full ranked breakdown is in the money guide.

Skills matter alongside wages: open the phone, find the skills section, and rank skills up by simply doing things in the game. Skills unlock better gigs and gear (the home-earning equipment, ring lights, tripods), so early skill XP pays twice (player-reported).

Step 4: Eat, Rest and Manage Your Bars

Lagos Life is not a coin counter, your Sim has six needs bars: hunger, energy, fun, social, hygiene and bladder (verified in-game). They gate everything. A Mood indicator sits alongside them, and the game nudges you with daily goals (like "eat something") plus a server-wide Daily gem hunt with naira prizes (verified in-game). Run them into the ground and your earning power collapses no matter how good your job is. This is where most beginners actually fail: they grind shifts, ignore food and sleep, and wonder why everything gets slower and worse. Eat, sleep, then work.

Step 5: Pay Your Rent (Before Anything Else)

Rent is the game's hard expense, the bill that arrives on schedule whether you're ready or not. Players report it lands weekly, typically on Saturdays (player-reported timing, not an official schedule). The budget order that keeps beginners alive:

The survival budget Rent first → food second → entertainment last, only with what truly remains. A wallet that always holds next week's rent is the difference between building a life and restarting one.

Step 6: Explore the Virtual City, Lagos, Abuja & Port Harcourt

The world recreates the texture of Nigerian city life: Vanguard's walkthrough name-checks spots like Amala Shitta (the legendary Surulere swallow spot) and Quilox (the nightclub), with transport, street food and nightlife all represented. At launch it was Lagos only; since 6 October 2026, Abuja and Port Harcourt are live, so yes, the “abuja life” and “port harcourt life” you've seen mentioned are part of this same game. Travel between cities exists; keep it occasional early on, while rent discipline still matters more than tourism. The full place lists for all three cities are below.

Two Lagos touches to expect (player-reported): some tasks run on the real-world clock (market loader gigs cool down for about 20 real minutes), and area boys can stop you on the road for a small toll. Keep a little loose change for the road.

Every Lagos location (29 places)

Step 7: Socialise, It's a Multiplayer Game

The city is shared with real players: you'll meet people, chat, and gather in public places. That's a big part of why it went viral, and why the safety rules matter. The game's terms explicitly prohibit harassment, threats, hate speech, sexual content, fraud and sharing others' private information.

⚠️ The one rule to internalise Anyone who asks for your money, your account password, or tries to move you off to another site or app is a scammer. No exception, no matter how helpful they seem. If it involves “withdrawing” naira, that's doubly fake, see the withdraw truth.

Step 8: Build Your Virtual Life (What to Do After Week One)

Once rent is routine and the bars are managed, the game opens up: climb your career's levels, acquire property, hire help, and chase the status systems (the in-game rich list players call Forbes). Where to go from here on this site:

Common Beginner Mistakes

  1. Not bargaining hard. Player-passed wisdom for market shopping: start at half the asking price and be willing to walk away, walking is often what moves the price.
  2. Face-spending at the start. New outfit, big nights out, better rides, early naira spent on image is naira not compounding. (Nepo babies: this is you.)
  3. Spending rent money. The classic. If the money is rent money, it isn't spending money.
  4. Betting to get rich. Viewing-center bets and live-bet games lose more than they win (player-tested). "Sometimes you win" is not a strategy.
  5. Believing “withdraw” is possible. It isn't, see below.

Can You Make Real Money in Lagos Life?

No. In-game naira cannot be withdrawn, transferred or exchanged for real money, the game's terms are explicit, and everything promising otherwise is a scam. That answer, the terms behind it, and a checklist for spotting cash-out scams, are covered in full on the withdraw page.

FAQ: How to Play Lagos Life

Do I need to download the Lagos Life app?

No. It's a browser game at lagoslife.app. There's no official app, and any “official APK” is fake, don't install it. (Safe app-like setup: Add to Home Screen.)

Is Lagos Life free to play?

Yes, free in your browser. You can optionally buy in-game naira with real money, but that exchange is strictly one-way.

What's the difference between Nepo and Lapo?

Nepo is the financially comfortable start; Lapo alludes to microfinance (LAPO is a real Nigerian microloan institution) and starts you with less, and in debt. Players report the gap as roughly ₦95k cash vs ~₦72k debt, but the game itself frames it as class, not published figures.

Which start is better, Nepo or Lapo?

You don't choose. It's random. Nepo: invest early, compound the advantage. Lapo: job the same day, cut non-essentials, save first rent immediately. Both converge at the same endgame.

How do I make money in Lagos Life?

Jobs first, gigs and freelance work alongside, in-game businesses later. Every path ranked in the money guide.

Why is my character always tired?

Work drains energy. Feed your character, let them rest, and stop running shifts back-to-back, efficiency tanks when the bars bottom out.

Why do I run out of money before rent?

Because rent wasn't budgeted first. Fixed order: rent → food → entertainment. Rent money is not spending money.
